About this postcard

A red clapboard, gambrel-roofed one-room schoolhouse with white trim stands on a rough stone foundation above a grassy bank and stone steps, with frame houses and utility poles in the background. The card names it as the Old Nathan Hale School House in New London, Connecticut, the school where the young schoolmaster and future Revolutionary War hero Nathan Hale is said to have taught in 1774-1775 before entering the Continental Army. The gambrel-roofed building, preserved as a historic shrine, is one of New London's best-known colonial relics.
