Old packet boat that carried Stonewall Jackson's remains, Lexington, VA, 1908

About this postcard

The picture shows the weathered wooden hull of an old canal packet boat, drawn up on dry ground among rocks and trees, its planked sides and cabin openings still visible. The caption identifies it as the boat that carried the remains of Confederate General Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson from Lynchburg to Lexington, Virginia. Jackson died of pneumonia in May 1863 after being wounded at Chancellorsville, and his body traveled by rail and canal to Lexington, where he was buried in the Stonewall Jackson Memorial Cemetery; the card records the derelict vessel decades later.
