Old Slave Market, St. Augustine, FL, 1935

About this postcard

The old market house at the east end of St. Augustine's Plaza de la Constitución appears as an open-air pavilion with a hipped roof, a small louvered bell tower, and broad steps. The spire of the Cathedral Basilica rises behind the trees, and a man carrying a basket and cane stands in the foreground on the paved street. The card's caption calls the building a landmark of antebellum days and dates it to 1840, when it was built as a public market. It also says the "slave market" name came from "an enterprising photographer to make his picture sell," a reminder that the popular label was a marketing invention rather than the building's original purpose.
