About this postcard

The Old South Church, now the Old South Meeting House, stands on Washington Street in downtown Boston, its brick walls, arched windows, and tall white steeple rising above the commercial blocks that crowd it. The printed caption calls it the "Sanctuary of Freedom" and notes that it had been restored inside and out to its pre-Revolutionary appearance. Built in 1729, it was the largest building in colonial Boston and hosted the mass town meetings that set the Boston Tea Party in motion in December 1773. Saved from demolition in 1876, it survives as a museum and historic site.
