About this postcard

The view shows the Old South Meeting House, a red-brick colonial meeting house with a tall white steeple and clock, standing at a street corner amid much taller stone commercial blocks. Pedestrians pass along the sidewalk below the arched windows, and the building's brick facade and white steeple contrast with the surrounding commercial blocks. Built in 1729 for the Third Church of Boston, the meeting house is best known as the hall where some 5,000 colonists gathered on December 16, 1773, before the Boston Tea Party. It was saved from demolition in 1876-77 and became a museum, and by the early twentieth century it stood as a Revolutionary landmark in the middle of a commercial downtown.
