About this postcard

A view down a narrow alley of the Old St. Louis Cemetery in New Orleans, lined on the left by a long row of whitewashed wall vaults and family tombs decorated with flowers, with a brick wall at the near left and a monument-topped tomb at right. Old St. Louis Cemetery No. 1, laid out in 1789 just outside the old French Quarter, is the oldest surviving cemetery in the city and is famous for its densely packed above-ground tombs and wall vaults, a burial form suited to the area's high water table. The site is also known as the resting place of figures such as voodoo priestess Marie Laveau.
