About this postcard
The Oldest School House stands behind a picket fence on St. George Street, a small weathered clapboard building with a shingled roof, its facade covered in blooming wisteria and fronted by flower beds. A painted banner reading "OLDEST SCHOOL HOUSE" hangs beside the gate. The house is presented as the oldest wooden schoolhouse, standing just within the old city gates in St. Augustine, known as the oldest city in the United States. A Spanish map of 1788 records the red cedar house "in fair condition," and the building was used in a recent exhibition as a contrast to modern school architecture. Its survival in the colonial quarter ties it to St. Augustine's long history under Spanish, British, and American flags.
