Olmos Dam, San Antonio, Texas, 1942

About this postcard

View of the long arched spillway of Olmos Dam stretching across a wooded valley, with flowering shrubs and yucca plants in the foreground and a water tower on the distant left horizon. Built for flood prevention at the edge of San Antonio, the dam crosses a dry channel that drains a wide area of Hill Country and empties into the San Antonio River. The structure cost $1,571,000, and about fifty bridges crossed the river within the city limits. The dam road was promoted as one of San Antonio's most attractive drives. The wartime message on the back asks for airplane or airport views, a small sign of wartime interest in aviation.
