Open-air stalls line Olvera Street in Los Angeles, with serapes, blankets, and other goods displayed beneath trees and against brick buildings. Shoppers and strollers move along the paved walkway of the old Mexican marketplace, known as El Paso de Los Angeles, "The Pathway of the Angels." The street was restored and reopened as a Mexican marketplace in 1930, part of an effort to preserve the old plaza area around the Old Avila Adobe, a landmark of the city's Mexican-era past.
