About this postcard
The view shows large stalactites hanging above a dense stand of stalagmites in Mammoth Cave, Kentucky, lit against a dark background. The caption names the group the Onyx Pillars, formations that "stand as sentinels guarding the passageway into the region known as the ONYX COLONNADE," and notes that the cave's deposits range from quill-thin points to a pillar 12 feet in diameter. Mammoth Cave was already an established tourist destination in south-central Kentucky, and named formations like these gave guided tours landmarks to point out along the underground routes.
