About this postcard
A bird's-eye view from over the water shows the Overseas Highway curving in from the lower left toward Key West, its causeway and bridges leading to the densely built, tree-shaded island town. The caption calls it the "New Overseas Highway" and promotes the road as a "great scientific marvel" that, together with the climate, fishing waters, and tropical setting, helped Key West take its place among resort cities. The highway opened in 1938, largely along the right-of-way of Henry Flagler's abandoned Florida East Coast Railway, and made Key West the southern end of a continuous drive from the mainland.
