About this postcard
A crowd gathers around the fountain on Pack Square, with the tall stone obelisk of the Vance Monument rising behind it. Brick commercial blocks, a streetcar, and horse-drawn wagons line the surrounding streets. The monument honors Zebulon Baird Vance, North Carolina's Civil War governor and longtime U.S. senator. The 75-foot granite obelisk, designed by Richard Sharp Smith, was dedicated in 1898 and stood on the square until its removal in 2021. Pack Square, laid out at the crossing of the town's main streets, was Asheville's civic and commercial center in the early 1900s.
