About this postcard

View across Pack Square in Asheville, North Carolina, with the tall granite obelisk of the Vance Monument at the center behind a circular fountain, geometric lawns and flower beds, and a street lamp in the foreground. Brick and stone commercial blocks with awnings line the square, and pedestrians and a horse-drawn carriage cross the open pavement. The monument, completed in 1898, honored Zebulon Baird Vance, North Carolina's Civil War governor and later U.S. senator. It stood in the square until its removal in 2021. In the early 1900s Pack Square served as Asheville's civic and commercial center.
