About this postcard

A crowd gathers around the fountain on Pack Square, with the tall stone obelisk of the Vance Monument rising behind it and brick commercial blocks, a streetcar and horse-drawn wagons lining the surrounding streets. The monument honors Zebulon Baird Vance, North Carolina's Civil War governor and longtime U.S. senator; the 75-foot granite obelisk, designed by architect Richard Sharp Smith, was dedicated in 1898 and stood on the square until its removal in 2021. The square, laid out at the crossing of the town's main streets, was long Asheville's civic and commercial center.
