About this postcard

View across Pack Square in Asheville, North Carolina, with the tall granite obelisk of the Vance Monument rising at the center behind a circular fountain, geometric lawns and flower beds, and a street lamp in the foreground. Brick and stone commercial blocks with awnings line the square, and pedestrians and a horse-drawn carriage cross the open pavement. The Vance Monument, completed in 1898, honored Zebulon Baird Vance, North Carolina's Civil War governor and later U.S. senator; the obelisk stood in the square until it was removed in 2021.
