The view looks across the Painted Desert in northern Arizona, where eroded ridges and flats in red, orange, ochre, and blue-green recede to a flat horizon under a pale sky. The printed caption describes an uninhabitable desert of multicolored sands that change with the light and weather, dropping 800 feet or more below the rim and stretching 14 to 40 miles wide toward the Grand Canyon country. In the 1930s, motorists on the highway between Holbrook, Arizona, and Gallup, New Mexico, could take in views like this from the rim.
Linen (crosshatch) texture overall; narrow white margin at edges; small nick at upper left corner; no printed caption or publisher line on front. Back: printed caption 'P. D. 28—PAINTED DESERT, ARIZONA' with descriptive text; publisher lines for J. R. Willis, Albuquerque, N. M., and Genuine Curteich-Chicago 'C.T. Art-Colortone'; divided back; no postmark; light edge wear/foxing.
