Palmers Island Light, New Bedford, Mass., 1906

About this postcard

A conical granite lighthouse with a dark lantern room and gallery railing stands on a low grassy island in New Bedford Harbor, its reflection streaking the calm water below. A breakwater and the distant city waterfront run along the horizon. Palmer Island Light, spelled "Palmers Island" in the printed caption, was built in the mid-19th century to guide vessels into New Bedford, a port that made its fortune in whaling and, by the time this card was mailed, was turning to textile mills. The light was discontinued in the 20th century and later restored as a harbor landmark.
