About this postcard

A conical stone lighthouse with a dark lantern room and gallery railing stands on a low grassy island in New Bedford Harbor, its reflection streaking the calm water below; a breakwater or pier and the distant city waterfront appear along the horizon. Palmer Island Light, a granite tower built in the mid-19th century, guided vessels into New Bedford, then one of the world's busiest whaling and later textile ports. The light was discontinued in the 20th century and later restored as a harbor landmark.
