About this postcard
A long, nearly empty waiting concourse under a vast barrel-vaulted glass and steel roof, with a colonnaded wall of tall windows on the left, a row of dark ticket and gate booths on the right, and a scattering of travelers in early-1900s dress. The card labels it the passenger concourse of the "New Union Station" in Washington, D.C. Union Station opened in 1907, designed by Daniel H. Burnham in the Beaux-Arts style and built by the Pennsylvania Railroad and Baltimore & Ohio as a grand joint terminal; its soaring concourse was among the largest interior spaces in the city.
