Pathfinder Dam, North Platte River, Wyoming, circa 1909

About this postcard

Water pours over Pathfinder Dam on the North Platte River, with dark rock ledges framing the spillway and a small building on the far bank partly hidden by spray. Pathfinder Dam was completed in 1909 by the U.S. Reclamation Service as part of the North Platte Project, a federal irrigation system that stored snowmelt for farms in eastern Wyoming and western Nebraska. Its masonry dam in a narrow canyon made it an early example of federal reclamation in the West.
