About this postcard
The view looks across the Pedlar Dam spillway, where water sheets down a long concrete wall set between wooded hills in Amherst County. A small gatehouse stands at the right end of the dam, and rocky, brush-covered ground fills the foreground below. Completed in 1906, the dam was built to secure Lynchburg's water supply. Its reservoir, an artificial lake a mile and a half long, held 500 million gallons and delivered 8 million gallons a day through a 30-inch conduit running 22 miles to the city. The dam itself measured 500 feet long and 70 feet high, with a 150-foot spillway.
