About this postcard

A perspective view of Monticello, Thomas Jefferson's plantation home outside Charlottesville, with a numbered key to the house, grounds, and nearby landmarks. The key runs from the entrance house and gift shop to the west front, honeymoon lodge, fish pond, terraces, servants' rooms and dairy, ice house, carriage house and stables, law office, and the site of Jefferson's nail factory. It also marks the cemetery where Jefferson is buried, Michie Tavern, the University of Virginia, the Charlottesville business district, Highway No. 20, and the road to Ashlawn. The caption credits Jefferson with designing and building the house. The view presents Monticello as a working plantation and a historic site. The key's inclusion of servants' rooms, dairy, ice house, and nail factory shows the domestic and industrial operations that supported the estate. The University of Virginia, which Jefferson founded, and the cemetery where he is buried sit within the same landscape. Michie Tavern, an 18th-century tavern moved near Monticello in 1927, appears as a nearby attraction, and Ashlawn points toward James Monroe's neighboring estate.
