A field of petrified logs lying on the sandy desert floor, their cross-sections glowing in reds, greens and yellows, with low badland mesas on the horizon. The caption names the Petrified Forest near Adamana, Arizona, a site of Triassic-age fossil wood that became a national monument in 1906 and a national park in 1962; Adamana was then the railroad stop from which visitors reached the deposits. The vivid coloring reflects the hand-tinted Photochrom process of the Detroit Photographic Company.
White border; printed caption and copyright stamp in red along the lower margin; light crease at upper left.
No postmark. Undivided back with "THIS SIDE FOR THE ADDRESS" and a stamp box reading UNITED STATES AND CANADA ONE CENT / FOREIGN TWO CENTS; front carries a 1899 Detroit Photographic Co. copyright line and a white border; light soiling and a few small ink specks, otherwise clean.
