Petrified logs and badland buttes, Petrified Forest National Park, Arizona, circa 1940

About this postcard

Scattered sections of petrified wood lie in the foreground of an arid badlands landscape, with banded, cone-shaped buttes and a capped rock spire rising behind them under a blue sky. The scene is characteristic of the Petrified Forest region of northeastern Arizona, where fallen Triassic-era trees were mineralized into quartz and the surrounding soft shales eroded into colorful, layered formations. The Petrified Forest was proclaimed a national monument in 1906 and redesignated a national park in 1962.
