About this postcard
The view shows large petrified logs in shades of red, purple, and brown resting on the sandy floor of a badlands basin, with a banded, eroded butte rising behind them. The caption calls the place "Petrified Forests, Arizona," an older plural for the area in the Painted Desert now preserved as Petrified Forest National Park. The logs come from Late Triassic Chinle Formation deposits, fossilized conifers whose wood was replaced by silica while growth rings and grain survived. The area was set aside as a national monument in 1906 and became a national park in 1962.
