Petrified wood and erosions, Petrified Forest, AZ, circa 1935

About this postcard

Scattered sections of petrified wood lie in the foreground of an arid badlands landscape, with banded, cone-shaped buttes and a capped rock spire rising behind them under a blue sky. An early explanation held that the logs lay for millions of years in "polluted waters" before silt and earth covered them, after which wind and water carved the surrounding erosions. The Petrified Forest region of northeastern Arizona preserves fallen Late Triassic trees whose wood was replaced by silica; the area was set aside as a national monument in 1906 and redesignated a national park in 1962.
