About this postcard

A halftone view of Phelps Gate, the towered Collegiate Gothic archway that forms the main entrance to Yale's Old Campus from College Street, flanked by bare winter trees and neighboring masonry buildings. Phelps Hall was built in the mid-1890s to designs by architect Charles C. Haight and named for William Walter Phelps, a Yale alumnus, congressman and diplomat; its gate serves as the ceremonial entry to the freshman quadrangle. The red Gothic lettering across the top names Miss Minnie Henke, evidently the person for whom this copy was printed or sent.
