About this postcard
The portrait shows King Philip IV of Spain in dark court dress with a wide lace golilla collar and an embroidered doublet. He holds a baton or rolled document, and the figure is set against a dark background that throws the pale face and collar into relief. Diego Velázquez, court painter to the Spanish Habsburgs, painted the king many times; this is the version in the Frick Collection in New York. Philip's reign from 1621 to 1665 covered the later Habsburg period, and Velázquez's portraits gave the court a lasting image of royal authority.
