Confederate infantry advance across open ground toward the Union line at Gettysburg, with smoke and shell bursts overhead and fallen soldiers, a drum, and a stone wall in the foreground. The scene depicts Pickett's Charge, the massed Confederate assault on Cemetery Ridge on July 3, 1863, the third day of the battle. The attack ended in heavy casualties and retreat. Gettysburg was the bloodiest engagement of the American Civil War and is often cited as its turning point.
