About this postcard

A color-printed battle scene titled "Pickett's Charge, Battle of Gettysburg, Pa.," showing Confederate infantry surging across open ground toward the Union line while smoke and shell bursts fill the sky, with fallen soldiers, a drum, and a stone wall in the foreground. The charge was the massed Confederate assault on Cemetery Ridge on July 3, 1863, the third day of the Battle of Gettysburg, and it ended in heavy casualties and retreat. Gettysburg itself, fought July 1-3, 1863, was the bloodiest engagement of the American Civil War and is often cited as its turning point.
