About this postcard
A color-printed view of Pickett's Charge, the Confederate infantry assault on the Union center at Gettysburg on July 3, 1863, showing ranks of soldiers surging across open ground toward a stone wall while smoke and shell bursts fill the sky and fallen men and a drum litter the foreground. The charge, named for Confederate Major General George Pickett, was the climax of the three-day battle and ended in heavy Southern casualties, marking a turning point of the American Civil War. The scene is a popular patriotic illustration rather than a photograph of the field.
