About this postcard
The view frames Pikes Peak through the red sandstone gateway formations of the Garden of the Gods, with green scrub and a pale dirt path in the foreground. The park, just west of Colorado Springs, was donated to the city in 1909 by the family of Charles Elliott Perkins on the condition that it stay free to the public. Pikes Peak, listed at 14,110 feet, was already a symbol of Colorado Springs as a resort and health destination. The message describes a day of driving across the wide open ranges of Colorado and Kansas and a ride up the peak by cog railway, a tourist route since the 1890s. At the summit, the thin air made breathing hard.
