About this postcard

Carl Bantzer's painting shows pilgrims at the tomb of the Holy Elizabeth (St. Elizabeth of Hungary), a tablet set into the floor and surrounded by flowers and candles. The sick and poor press close to touch the tomb for healing, while incense from a large censer fills the room. Hooded figures and a blond figure in a green robe kneel among the crowd, and candlelight catches the smoke. The work hangs in the Dresden Gallery. St. Elizabeth was a 13th-century princess who gave her wealth to the poor; her grave became a pilgrimage site after her canonization in 1235.
