About this postcard

A bronze figure of a pioneer woman striding forward with a small boy at her side stands atop a stepped limestone base inscribed "PIONEER WOMAN," set in a grassy park with flowering shrubs and trees behind. The statue, sculpted by Bryant Baker, was commissioned by oilman E. W. Marland and unveiled in Ponca City in 1930 after a national competition, honoring the women who settled the American West. The card's linen-era coloring and the printed number 18 date it to the mid-twentieth century.
