Playing shuffleboard in Florida, circa 1930

About this postcard

A long row of men and women in casual dress of the period stand along a marked shuffleboard court, cues in hand, while spectators sit on benches to the right. Palm trees, an American flag on a pole, a red-roofed building and a lattice tower rise behind them. The printed caption reads simply "PLAYING SHUFFLEBOARD IN FLORIDA." Shuffleboard was a signature winter pastime at Florida resorts and municipal parks from the 1920s into the 1950s, when seasonal visitors turned out for casual matches and organized tournaments on courts laid out in public squares and hotel grounds.
