A landscaped plaza with curving walks, lawns and beds of bright flowers, a tall flagpole flying the American flag, and low red-tile-roofed buildings among large trees. The caption names it the Plaza of Old Town San Diego, the heart of the settlement founded after the 1769 Spanish presidio and mission on nearby Presidio Hill — hence the slogan 'Where California Was Born.' The adobe and Spanish Colonial buildings around the square are today preserved within Old Town San Diego State Historic Park.
