About this postcard
A white clapboard meetinghouse with a tall multi-staged steeple and slender spire stands behind a picket fence on a tree-lined street, with two women and a man in period dress on the sidewalk and a storefront with awnings at right. The printed caption identifies it as the Pleasant Street Unitarian Congregational Church of Newburyport, Massachusetts, built in 1801. The congregation descends from the First Religious Society of Newburyport, and the 1801 meetinghouse is a noted example of Federal-era New England church architecture with its tiered, balustraded steeple.
