About this postcard

A color view of the Plum Island Lighthouse station: a white clapboard keeper's dwelling with a porch and shingled roof stands in front of the tall white conical tower with its dark lantern room, with outbuildings and a sandy beach in the foreground. Plum Island Light marks the southern entrance to the Merrimack River at Newburyport, and the present 1856 tower replaced earlier lights on the island; the station was later moved and rebuilt in the 1890s as the shifting sands threatened it. The card's own caption names the site as "Newburyport, Mass, Plum Island Light."
