The portrait shows Pocahontas (Matoaka) at about age 21, in a dark dress with a large lace collar and holding a fan. The caption names her as Matoaks, a variant of Matoaka, and as Rebecca, daughter of the Powhatan emperor, baptized in the Christian faith and wife of Mr. Tho. Rolf, likely John Rolfe. The portrait presents her as a Christian convert and English gentlewoman, a role shaped for her 1616 visit to London. It is a British School work of the early seventeenth century.
