About this postcard
A flat-color comic illustration shows a mustachioed policeman in a domed helmet and dark uniform escorting a smiling woman in a yellow dress who carries a bottle. Behind them sits a black patrol wagon with yellow spoked wheels. The printed caption reads "HE CERTAINLY WAS GOOD TO ME," the punchline of a tipsy-arrest gag. Drunkenness and the friendly neighborhood patrolman were reliable comic subjects in the early 1900s, when humorous cards were among the most popular and cheapest items in the postcard boom. Millions were bought, mailed and kept in albums, and the flat-color lithography used here was the standard inexpensive printing method for such cards.
