The view shows the Polk County Court House in Des Moines, Iowa, a large classical building with a central clock tower and golden dome. In 1911 Des Moines was Iowa's capital and a busy railroad and insurance center; the courthouse housed county courts and offices and stood as a civic landmark. The sender, a son writing home to Clay Center, Kansas, reports snow, cold, and more than a thousand students in the city.
