About this postcard
A view across the landscaped grounds of Jackson Square toward the long red-brick Pontalba Building, its rows of windows and cast-iron galleries partly screened by trees and shrubs, with a cast-iron urn on a pedestal in the foreground and a couple of strollers on the walk. The matching Pontalba row buildings flanking the square were erected in 1849–1851 by Baroness Micaela Almonester de Pontalba and are often cited as among the oldest continuously rented apartment buildings in the United States. Jackson Square itself, laid out in 1721 as the Place d'Armes, is the historic heart of the French Quarter.
