Port Antonio harbor with palms and ships, Jamaica, circa 1901

About this postcard

Looking down over Port Antonio's harbor, with tall coconut palms and a large tree in the foreground and several vessels in the blue-green water below. A white steamer and a smaller boat flying the American flag lie among the forested hills of Jamaica's northeast coast. Port Antonio grew as a banana-shipping port in the late 19th century, and United Fruit Company steamships linked it with U.S. ports, carrying fruit and passengers. The harbor view reflects that trade and the early tourist traffic it brought to the island.
