The Portals of the Past, a white classical colonnade, stands on a grassy bank at Lloyd Lake in Golden Gate Park. Trees and a red-flowering shrub frame the monument, and its reflection shows in the still water. The portico is a memento of the 1906 San Francisco earthquake and fire, practically all that remained standing of one of Nob Hill's grand mansions. Golden Gate Park was created from bare sand dunes in the 1870s under John McLaren and stretches from Stanyan Street to the ocean.
