About this postcard
A full-length outdoor portrait of a mustachioed man standing on bare, uneven ground in front of a rough split-rail fence, with trees and brush beyond it. He wears a dark suit jacket, a white shirt and tie, striped trousers, a straw hat, and a small pin or badge on his lapel, and he faces the camera squarely in the stiff, formal stance common to small-town studio and outdoor sittings of the period. The card was mailed in April 1914 from Hughart, a small community in West Virginia, to Miss Bessie Greene in Cornwall, Virginia. Real photo postcards allowed local photographers to print a portrait directly onto card stock, so a picture like this one could be made and sent within a few days.
