Two framed oil portraits of James K. Polk and Sarah Childress Polk appear side by side against a white ground. At left, the dark-haired president wears a black coat and white cravat; at right, his wife wears an off-the-shoulder black gown. Both are held in ornate gilded rococo-revival frames.
George P. A. Healy painted the pair at the White House in 1846, during Polk's single term as the eleventh president. The caption places the portraits in the Polk ancestral home in Columbia, Tennessee, now a museum.
White border visible around the image; color reproduction of painted portraits of President and Mrs. Polk, painted by Healy in 1846 at the White House, with printed caption for the Ancestral Home of James Knox Polk, Eleventh President of the United States, Columbia, Tennessee.
