About this postcard

The card pictures the St. Louis Post Office, a massive Second Empire-style federal building with a tall central dome and mansard roof, as named in the printed caption. Completed in the 1880s to designs by Alfred B. Mullett, the building combined post office and federal court functions and is now known as the Old Post Office. Its monumental scale reflects St. Louis's role as a major Mississippi River city in the late nineteenth century.
