About this postcard

The card shows the St. Louis Post Office, a massive Second Empire federal building with a tall central dome and mansard roof. Alfred B. Mullett designed it, and it was completed in 1884 to house the post office, customs house, and federal courts. The building later became known as the Old Post Office. Its scale matched St. Louis's standing as a busy Mississippi River port and rail center in the decades after the Civil War.
