Ethel writes to Hannah Beards in Balboa with a week's worth of small news from the Canal Zone. She mentions a strong Sunday sermon and a good church crowd, Elmer's return home weak and starved, and the birthday club gathering on Thursday. The note keeps returning to absence: "I miss you at home & I miss you at church" and "The whole family misses the Beards more than we can say." Carl's cute sayings and Everett's visit round out a domestic round of church, family, and neighbors.

Dear Hannah: - Sun P.M.
I miss you at home
& I miss you at church, a
splendid sermon this A.M. & good
crowd. Elmer came home this A.M.
but weak & starved. I just cant
get over this week, but here's
hoping you'll see enough of the
birthday club folks on Thurs
(I suppose it's that day) & that
you'll be staying all night
Thurs with us. Of course I dont
think you'd wait to be invited
but I do hope you can stay
with us. The whole family
misses the Beards more than
we can say. When I told B.
about Carl putting down some
as boy next to him she said
We're going to miss a lot of his
cute sayings. Everett is here for
a few days. I'll have to get
over next week Love Ethel.
