Across a still pond or river bend, low flowering shrubs and dark evergreen woods frame the long blue profile of the Presidential Range in New Hampshire's White Mountains. The range is the highest group in the northeastern United States, crowned by Mount Washington at 6,288 feet, and it drew resort guests and view-card photographers to the White Mountains in the early 20th century. The sender, Mattie, writes that she can see Mount Washington and the range from where she is staying on every clear day.
